April 22 is International Earth Day. Every year on this day, people around the world come together to commemorate Earth Day by doing something that brings them closer to the nature. With increased environmental awareness and education across communities big and small, Earth Day has become a global event for people to show their commitment and dedication to environmental sustainability.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 when Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, inspired 20 million Americans to participate in peaceful demonstrations in support of environmental reform. In 2009, the United Nations unanimously voted to officially recognize April 22 as International Mother Earth Day. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, which organizes celebrations in more than 192 countries every year.
As a public water service provider, environmental sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Water is a precious, finite resource and we understand that sustainable development means finding ways to preserve this precious resource forever so that we can meet our customers’ needs not just today, but tomorrow. As a utility company we also believe that our customers and communities play an important role in helping us achieve our sustainability goals. This Earth Day we would like to remind our readers to make water conservation a part of their daily lives. You can support environmental sustainability at home, while saving water and money, by practicing the three Rs of the environment – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
